Nissan trims VAT

The Nissan LEAF is the latest model in the quasi-British company’s line-up to receive the Visia-Acenta-Tekna trim structure.

It’s been familiar since early Qashqai days and, given how that’s a concrete top-10 best seller here in the UK, is now widely understood by hundreds of thousands of car buyers.

But how do you remember which is which? How, at a glance, do you understand which is equivalent to L, which is GL and which is Ghia?

Easy: deploy a mnenomic. V-A-T.

Visia is base L, Acenta is mid-range GL, Tekna is Ghia. Simples.

Such at-a-glance simplification of model range heirachy is important nowadays. Brand proliferation is rife, more manufacturers are offering fuller ranges and the early millenium flight of fancy from brand managers arguably went too far.

Remember how Renault used to offer Megane Expression, Dynamique, Privilege, Authentique, with the odd Fidji and Extreme thrown in for good measure. It was too much. It meant nothing.

That’s why Kia today offers 1, 2, 3. Why Renault now has just Expression and Dynamique. Why most other brands base their ranges around S, SE and some kind of sport variant.

Nissan’s solution is perfect. Elegant, memorable and clear. Just what new car buyers, auction-hunters and used car buyers need to understand how a potential purchase stacks up.

Model lines: they don’t have to be taxing.
